MetaRenamer is a macOS utility for batch renaming files and editing media metadata.
Getting started
Drag files or folders into MetaRenamer, or select Add Files.
Turn on rules in Batch Rules and check the old → new preview. A name shown in red can't be used (for example, two files would get the same name) and will be skipped — hover it to see why.
Select Apply Rename (⌘↩). The button shows how many files will change.
Use One by One when you want to approve each filename individually.
Undo
Undo (⌘Z) reverses the last rename — a whole batch is one step — and keeps working after you quit and reopen MetaRenamer. Restore all returns every renamed file to its original name. While you're typing in a text field, ⌘Z undoes the typing instead.
Every rename is listed in the Rename Log (the clock button at the bottom right), which you can search and export as CSV.
MetaRenamer Pro and the free trial
MetaRenamer is free to download. Open Unlock Pro and select Start 30-Day Free Trial to try every Pro feature; the trial never charges automatically. Pro is a one-time purchase.
Mac App Store version
Pro is bought through the App Store. If you already bought it, choose Restore Purchases at the bottom of the purchase window.
Direct-download version
Open Unlock Pro → Buy MetaRenamer Pro. After checkout you'll see your license key.
Paste it into License key and select Activate. A key that wrapped across lines in an email still works.
Keep the key: use it to activate Pro on your other Macs. To move it off a Mac, use the gear menu → Remove License from This Mac.
Lost your key? Email us from the address you used at checkout and we'll send it again.
Updates
The Mac App Store version updates through the App Store. The direct-download version (6.7.2 and later) checks for updates once a day and installs them for you; you can also choose MetaRenamer → Check for Updates…. Earlier direct-download versions should be updated once from the download page.
If a purchase is temporarily unavailable, confirm that the Mac is online and select Retry.
MetaRenamer can change only files and folders you add yourself (drag and drop or the Open panel). If a single file can't be renamed, MetaRenamer asks once for access to its folder.
Before applying a large batch, review the preview and try a small set of files first.
